Just a short distance from the crowded World Heritage Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) lies a little oasis of calm and charm — one that many visitors completely miss.
We spent a very happy day exploring the area around Nanzenji Temple, home to the impressive Sanmon entrance gate, which we climbed to the top for views across the temple grounds. Nanzenji is one of Japan’s most important Zen temples, known for its spacious layout, fascinating history and beautifully composed rock gardens.
Nanzenji and Tenjuan Temple
While Nanzenji itself is a joy to explore, the real highlight for me was the garden connected to Tenjuan Temple next door.
I fell in love with this Zen paradise, with its huge rock pond, lush verdant planting and teasing stepping stones. Thankfully, the discreet bamboo rails save you from sharing a dip with the massive koi carp gliding through the water.
This dreamy hidden oasis tends not to be crowded, meaning you can linger, wander and soak up the atmosphere at your own pace.
Stretch Your Legs Nearby
If you feel like extending your walk, the famous Philosopher’s Path is close by — a peaceful waterside trail dotted with small art galleries and cafés.
And when you’re ready to rejoin the buzz of the city, the lively Gion District is just a short bus ride away.
If you’re looking for somewhere more rewarding — and far less frenetic — than the Golden Pavilion, this is why this corner of Kyoto delivers in spades:
- Close to one of Kyoto’s busiest attractions
- Calm, spacious temple grounds
- Rarely crowded gardens
- Easy to combine with walking routes and city districts
