Pitch Envy
7 August, 2024

When I arrive on a campsite, my usual emotions are of childlike giddiness and depending on how the van is performing, relief. However, there is one site on the North Devon Coast where my heart starts pumping five minutes away. This is motivated by the deep hope my dream pitch will be free and the sense of doom if it’s already taken. North Morte Farm Caravan and Camping Park at Mortehoe near Woolacombe is a gem and has several undulating fields with fantastic ocean views. This area is a free for all full of many wonderful spots with mesmerizing views. My problem is I’ve become fixated about one particular pitch on a delicious raised tump with the most stunning aspect. On every single visit so far, when we have turned the corner into the field it has already been taken. If we are staying for a few days I perform a morning patrol to see if the current occupants are leaving but they never do! On arrival I tend to sulk for an hour then find one of the other numerous fantastic spots, buy a cold local beer from the site shop, soak up the view and grow up a little bit. If you want to see footage of my fixation here’s the link.
