Tokyo’s Hidden Alleyway Bars in Golden-Gai

This exotic area of atmospheric alleyways and tiny bars provided us with many memorable moments. Located just behind the buzzing district of Shinjuku, Golden-Gai invites you to dive in with both feet — and I promise you’ll feel like a proper traveller.

A Glimpse of History

Golden-Gai hasn’t changed much since it started as a black-market area in the 1950s. It retains an authentic vibe, with the hint that something naughty, risqué, or even bawdy might occur. Wandering through the narrow lanes, it’s easy to imagine the stories that have unfolded here over decades.

Throw Yourself In

Tasked by the Holiday Architects team, we threw ourselves into the experience by visiting several bars, meeting locals, and giving karaoke a go. You’ll have to watch the videos to see if we succeeded — all I can tell you is my “Waku waku” level went through the roof.

Golden-Gai is one of those places where authentic encounters and memorable moments happen if you embrace the adventure fully.

A Traveller’s Perspective

I’ll leave you with one of my favourite quotes that sums up the ethos behind the help I received to squeeze every drop out of my visit to Japan:

“The traveller sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.” G.K. Chesterton

Kyoto: How to experience Arashiyama Bamboo Forest without the crowds

The famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is worth a visit, but it can be hugely crowded — so here’s a great tip for making the most of this area. We took a taxi higher up the Arashiyama hillside to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple and spent a couple of dreamy hours exploring this...
