Empty Nester hits the road again
The joy of travel writing is sharing adventures to make your heart sing, inspiring ideas that might lead to you having similar experiences and conveying how travelling can enrich our lives. In the past few months I’ve slept in a remote Japanese temple, taken a train from my local station all over Europe and agreed to face my worst travel fear – going on a cruise ship.
This year I’ve had nine extraordinary days trekking high in the Japanese mountains following the ancient Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage trail. American naturalist John Muir sums up my feelings when hiking in the mountains “We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us.” My “pores and cells” were recently treated to nine days trekking in Japan through mesmeric Cedar forests interwoven with gentle rivers, meandering streams and thunderous waterfalls.
Keep reading If you want to know more about the pilgrimage or and about hidden treasures to discover in Kyoto as well as the areas of Tokyo that most tourists don’t but should experience. I also reveal the perfect way to beat the crowds and find the almond blossom in Osaka.
If “No Flight” adventures are your thing I can’t wait for you to read about my recent trip with Byway Travel across Europe. There is an indescribable buzz of reliving your “Inter Rail and Amtrak” youth by heading all over Europe as if you are competing in Race Across the World. I jumped on a train at Kemble Station in the Cotswolds and had the most thrilling rail trip stopping off in Paris, Geneva, Milan, Lecco by Lake Como, Chur and Bern in Switzerland. The highlight was snaking high up in the Alps from Italy to Switzerland through the world-famous Bernina Pass.
I’ve just taken on the challenge of a cruise ship experience (I am not a fan of the big vessels) despite dreading being stuck with a boring couple from Telford for the whole trip. See how I got on with my cruise around The Cyclades. My next adventures will take me to Singapore and back to see how Sydney has changed 35 years after I lived there for a year.
